CABINET INCREASES STATE SCHOLARSHIP TO US$25,000
CUOPMNEWSCONTENT
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JUNE 9TH 2005 (CUOPM) - Cabinet has increased the State Scholarship from US$20,000 to US$25,000.

At its weekly meeting Cabinet Meeting on Monday, Ministers of Government reviewed the terms and conditions of the State Scholarship and agreed to the request for an increase from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Hon. Sam Condor.

While the State Scholarship is primarily taken up at the University of the West Indies (UWI) some recipients have opted to pursue their degrees of interest at universities outside the region.

Mr. Condor pointed out that although a course of study at the UWI may be encouraged “the State Scholar should not be penalised if he or she chooses not to study at the UWI, as the Award is intended to ensure that Scholars are reasonably comfortable and not experience excessive hardship since this could affect them mentally and in turn their performance.”

He contended also that inflation and tuition increases over the years have necessitated the hike to ensure that scholars are not adversely affected by pursuing studies at UWI or any other university of their choice.
